National Museum in Paro
Bhutan is developing its museum network every year, but still the choices are limited. The National Museum located in Paro has an intriguing round shape because it was once used as a lookout tower for the Paro Dzong below. Do not miss climbing to the top floor where you will see Bhutan's extraordinary postage stamp collection-regarded as the most unusual in the world. The museum contains silk, steel, scented, sculptural and the world's first "talking stamp" on a tiny phonograph record. The innovative, new CD-ROM stamps, which use computer-age technology, will be added to that postage stamp collection. A new series creating something innovative that uses technology from the 21st century.
Textile Museum
This is a lovely museum, housing a collection of textiles and arts organized under the patronage of Her Majesty the Queen Ashi Sangay Choden Wangchuck. Bhutanese textiles have become an art form. Through its exhibitions, the museum hopes to promote an understanding of Bhutan's distinctive achievements in the textile arts.
National Institute of Traditional Medicine Museum
This museum focuses on Bhutanese traditional herbal medicines. Herbal plants found within the kingdom are prepared into medicines here. The institute also offers courses to educate students on traditional medicines.
Folk Heritage Museum
Walk into a traditional Bhutanese home much like those that still exist today. This museum displays a traditional Bhutanese rural home structure created with mud and timber. This fully furnished dwelling dates back to the early 19th century.
Taktsang Monastery (Tiger's Nest)
This site's name came when Guru Rinpoche was carried there on the back of a tigress to perform his meditations. The monastery is considered most sacred, and all Bhutanese visit this location at least once. This holy site caught fire in 1988 causing extensive damage. The monastery has since been renovated and restored back to its original beauty. Do not miss this even if you have to ride a pony up the winding path. If you choose to hike plan for a long but memorable experience worth every step. |
